2024 development - Artist in Residence supported by Flipside Circus

We are thrilled to be part of Flipside Circus' Artist-in-Residency program in 2024. This serves as a catalyst for the realisation of our creative aspirations at Collective Circus. This unique opportunity provides us with invaluable assistance and resources, supporting the creative development of our new fiercely feminist work, STIR THE POT.

Enter a world of glitter, sass, strength and girlhood in Collective Circus' newest work, STIR THE POT. Tumbling through real experiences of inequality and societal pressures, this group of fierce, passionate female circus performers stir up and tear apart the traditional, domestic views of what it means to be female. In a celebration of bows, sparkle and sheer muscle, these acrobats tackle everything from the restrictions and challenges to connection and strength of femininity. Brace yourselves as you bare witness to a gravity-defying, nail-biting, untamed exploration of girl power.

New show in development , STIR THE POT, is a distinctively feminist, circus-based performance work that strives to uplift, move and empower audiences. Through acrobatics, we intend to vividly portray how these universal feminine experiences have shaped us since childhood, showcasing our growth and resilience as young females.

STIR THE POT isn't merely a performance; it's a platform for young individuals, especially females, to feel heard and understood. We're dedicated to making a tangible impact, engaging studies within our communities to gather real voices and stories.

By weaving personal stories with collective experiences, we aspire to create an emotionally resonant work that validates those who have felt unheard, frustrated, belittled and trapped. We are motivated to unpack the specific question of what it means to be a female today. STIR THE POT is a testament to shared stories' power to inspire change, evoke empathy, and unite us on the path to empowerment and equality.

MEET THE TEAM

Founder / Producer / Performer

ZOE JOINER

Zoe began her artistic journey as a gymnast and dancer, later discovering a passion for circus arts, specializing in lyra, silks, and trapeze. At 15, she moved to Melbourne for further training, completing a Circus Arts certificate at NICA. Returning to the Gold Coast, Zoe trained with Aerial Angels and joined Circa Youth Ensemble.

After graduating from youth circus pursuits, Zoe founded Collective Circus, a group of independent artists dedicated to innovative works in the circus world. Beyond performing, she shares her passion as a trainer, contributing to the growth of aspiring artists.

A recent graduate with a Bachelor of Creative Industries from QUT, majoring in entertainment, Zoe is poised to make meaningful contributions to the dynamic world of circus and entertainment.

MAXI MOSSMAN

Maxi Mossman is a Brisbane-based emerging theatre maker with a focus in holistic, sensory theatre design and contemporary performance. While completing her Bachelor of Creative Industries (Drama), Maxi is also a core company member of Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre. Recently, she entered the independent theatre scene with her award-Winning

directorial debut, A Drop Too Many. Maxi’s diverse skillset and passions in stage management, performance, visual art, design and direction cultivates theatrical worlds that deeply engage audiences.

LUCY HUNTERLAND

Lucy’s love for circus started at the age of 12 with aerials. She quickly excelled to Flipside’s performance troupe where she recently graduated. Lucy specialises in double trapeze, duo acro, and group acro. When she’s not being walked on, Lucy loves to spend her time at the beach and teaching the next generation of circus performers. She hopes to take circus

to the next level and pursuit a global career. She believes that this would be an exceptional experience to share her love of circus while connecting with different cultures and audiences around the world.

INDRA GARVEY

Indra has been immersed in circus arts since the age of six, training with Flipside Circus and performing as part of their renowned performance troupe. Specialising and training in tumbling, group acrobatics, double trapeze, tightwire, handstands, and teeterboard, she has honed a diverse range of skills over the years.

Her performance experience includes notable productions such as SPF (HOTA), Dogs in the Schoolyard (QPAC), and the Matilda Award-winning We Live Here performed in the State Theatre Centre of WA as part of the Awesome Festival in Perth (2022). She also featured in From Little Things (2023), a collaboration with Casus Creations. Indra's final performance in Flipside Circus's New Beginnings marked the end of a significant chapter in her circus journey.

As a key member of Collective Circus, Indra recently participated in their Artists in Residence program at Flipside Circus. She played a vital role as both performer and co-creator of Stir The Pot, which sold out at the Judith Wright Arts Centre in 2024 and at the National Circus Festival in collaboration with Spaghetti Circus.

Having recently graduated high school, Indra is excited to continue her journey in the circus industry as an emerging performer. She looks forward to expanding her skill set, becoming a multifaceted artist, and sharing stories around the world while doing what she loves.

TALLULAH BENNETTON

Tallulah Benetton discovered circus through classes at Circa Contemporary Circus, before transitioning into the CIRCA Zoo youth ensemble. Tallulah specialises in aerial straps and tumbling. With Circa Zoo she has performed in many shows, including performances for the Brisbane Festival and Commonwealth

Games Festival (2018), and has collaborated with other youth circus groups and dance students on several occasions.

ANABELLA GREGORY

Anabella was always a performer at heart, so circus for her was a place where she could thrive. She began circus at age 11 and started performing at age 15 with Circa Contemporary Circus’ Youth Ensemble, and has performed at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) and Home of the Arts (HOTA).

Anabella now trains in multiple circus spaces in Brisbane, including Circa Contemporary Circus, Vulcana Women’s Circus, and Flipside Circus, where she also teaches. Along with this, she is involved with Brisbane-based physical theatre company Zen Zen Zo and has been accepted into their Creative Entrepreneur Internship in 2024. Anabella is also currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in drama at the Queensland University of Technology to expand her practice into other areas of the arts.

Specialising in aerial silks and acro, Anabella is eager to be a part of the next generation of performers and is always ready to jump into anything with full energy and enthusiasm.
