Audience member- “A colour-filled flurry. Contorted bodies flying everywhere. A thrilling depiction of youth – and the importance of being there for one another. These are the thoughts that linger after watching Collective Circus’s newest creation, Waitlisted co-directed by Alex Mizzen. The expressive power of these young people cannot be understated. They have elegantly and carefully crafted a work that makes clear both the acrobatic prowess and strength of the performers, as well as their creativity and artistic sensibility. This rapturous combination of on-stage awareness and skilful dynamism allows them to explore deeper societal issues which are consistently felt by young people throughout the community, the nation, and the world. The pacing of the show and transitions between acts, along with the costuming and musical choices, are all intelligent and appropriate and showcase the artistic intention which has driven the creation since its conception. In a time when the world is starting to connect once more, Collective Circus has created a beautiful and poignant work that reminds us of the value of coming together. Waitlisted is a show not to be missed. “
Meet The Artists
Zoe Joiner
FOUNDER / PRODUCER / ARTIST
Zoe began her artistic journey as a gymnast and dancer, later discovering a passion for circus arts, specialising in lyra, silks, and trapeze. At 15, she moved to Melbourne for further training, completing a Circus Arts certificate at NICA. Returning to the Gold Coast, Zoe trained with Aerial Angels and joined Circa’s Youth Ensemble. After graduating from youth circus pursuits, Zoe founded Collective Circus, a group of independent artists dedicated to innovative works in the circus world. Beyond performing, she shares her passion as a trainer, contributing to the growth of aspiring artists. A recent graduate with a Bachelor of Creative Industries from QUT, majoring in entertainment, Zoe is wishes to make meaningful contributions to the dynamic world of circus and entertainment.
Izzy Lawton
ARTIST
Izzy fell in love with performing at a young age, through her dance classes. At 11 she began acrobatic classes at her old dance studio, where she developed a strong passion for being upside down. After 3 years of acro she decided to enrol in Circus classes. From there she then auditioned for Circa’s youth ensemble CIRCA ZOO where she trained and performed for 2 years. She now works as a circus trainer/performer and has since travelled to over 15 different communities teaching circus workshops. Izzy specialises in Tumbling, Group Acro and Hula. She is looking forward to working with Collective Circus and watching the company grow. She is super excited to have the opportunity to work with an amazing group of emerging artists.
Christina Godwin
ARTIST
Having trained as a gymnast and a dancer as a child, Christina found circus through Circa Classes in 2012 and fell in love with the beautiful creativity, freedom and physicality of the art form. Christina joined Circa’s elite youth ensemble in 2013 and has dedicated herself to her training since. With Circa Zoo, Christina has performed onstage alongside the Circa ensemble in major Australian festivals, travelled across Queensland to bring circus to rural communities, and collaborated with other young artists for Festival 2018 as part of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games celebrations.
Specialising in handstands, tumbling, acro and trapeze, Christina is passionate about teaching, performing and directing circus and is hoping to advance into the professional space in the near future with a new local troupe, Collective Circus.
For Christina being apart of Collective Circus is an amazing opportunity to jump into the circus world as an artist and start her career. She feels lucky to be working with incredible people from such diverse artistic backgrounds and hopes to grow and learn from them during this experience.
Eve Timins
ARTIST
Eve Timmins discovered circus in 2015 when she joined Circa Contemporary Circus’s Youth Ensemble CIRCA Zoo and is currently studying a Bachelor of Speech Pathology (Honours) at the University of Queensland.
CIRCA Zoo has given her the opportunity to perform for audiences around Queensland in several shows including A Little Wonder, Tempus, Bloom, Fred Bobby & Me, Circus of the Senses, and Antithesis. She has also performed at the Bundaberg Crush Festival and Brisbane Arts Festival, alongside the Circa Ensemble in “Leviathan” (2020).
Through this experience, Eve has developed a love for performing and creating, which she is excited to have the opportunity to explore more independently with Collective Circus. She has developed a particular interest in the areas of tissu, handstands, acro and straps. Eve has also developed a passion for teaching circus, which she has been doing for the past year and a half.
Levi Dan
ARTIST
Levi has been a Brisbane-based youth circus artist since 2016. He specialises in tumble movement and acro, he has also trained in parkour, judo, jiujitsu, climbing, gymnastics and trampolining. Levi is currently in his third year of training with Circa Zoo, in which he has recently performed with in Brisbane Festival. Levi wishes to further pursue his dreams of circus in which working with Collective Circus has helped bring an amazing opportunity to kickstart his circus career.
Anisah Collins
ARTIST
Anisah has adored being upside down for most of her life. After training in CIRCA’s Youth Troupe during her teenage years she joined Collective Circus. Anisah has performed at The National Circus Festival, Brisbane Festival and Woodford Folk Festival and spent 2023 studying at NICA. Anisah specialises in acrobatics, hula hoops and creative tumbling.
Miranda Shapcott
ARTIST
Miranda Shapcott has been immersed in circus since the age of 5. Since then, she has trained with a number of circuses in Brisbane, developing her skills and exploring her love for performing. Currently, Miranda is a member of both CIRCA ZOO and Collective Circus, where she is consolidating her physical, collaborative, and creative skills. Recent performances include “Leviathan” (2020) (with Circa Contemporary Circus) at QPAC and “Return to Earth” (2020) at HOTA. Miranda is excited to be branching out and defining herself as a circus artist, especially within the artistically and physically engaging community of talented young artists currently training in Brisbane. She seizes every opportunity to build her career in circus arts.
Tallulah Bennetton
ARTIST
Tallulah Benetton discovered circus through classes at Circa Contemporary Circus, before transitioning into the CIRCA Zoo youth ensemble. Tallulah specialises in aerial straps and tumbling. With Circa Zoo she has performed in many shows, including performances for the Brisbane Festival and Commonwealth Games Festival (2018), and has collaborated with other youth circus groups and dance students on several occasions.
